I took my first bookbinding class in 1993 from Carolee Campbell (Ninja Press) at Otis School of the Arts. Since then I’ve taken classes at the Penland School of Arts and Crafts in North Carolina and the Paper and Book Intensive. Until 2009 I taught basic book structures to interns as part of my work, but then my job changed and I lost that teaching component. However, that year my friend Jenny Ryan opened Home Ec. in Silver Lake and invited me to teach some classes there. Since then I have taught a suite of bookbinding classes from my studio and most recently at ReForm School in Los Angeles and Alphabet City in Auckland, New Zealand. My teaching philosophy is firmly rooted in the D.I.Y. movement. I think you can make wonderful books by hand using some tools from around your house and the best supplies you can afford.
In 2012 I will start teaching classes at my studio by request. Please contact me if you are interested in Coptic Binding, Case Binding or Stab Binding and we will find a date that works for class. Read on for class descriptions and prices.

Students will leave class with one finished binding and step-by-step instructions. All supplies and tools provided.

$100 per student
In this class students will learn to construct a hardback journal with a cloth and paper cover.

Stab Binding
4 hours
$80 per student
In this fun class students will make their own decorated paper covers using the paste paper technique and then sew 3 books in the Japanese stab bound style.
Stab bound books are excellent presentation bindings for works on paper and photography, not to mention a great way to bind pesky single sheets left over from other projects. At the end of class students will have examples of three different stab bindings: 4-hole, Noble, and Tortoise Shell, as well as their own paste paper decorated papers for future projects.
Lecture and demonstration will cover:
- supplies and suppliers
- decorating paper with the paste paper technique
- prepping and sewing three different stab binding styles
- design considerations
All supplies and tools provided.
